Free (and $1) old movies

Although there are no free screenings of NEW films here in town, there are free (and $1) screenings of old movies!

The Museum of Art & Archaeology is sponsoring a film series which is free and open to the public.  All screenings are at Pickard Hall Rm 106 at 7pm.  Here are the remaining films for this season:
July 16 (tonight) -- The Women (1939) -- "This film adaptation of the Clare Booth Luce play, based on a conversation overheard in a ladies room, features an all-female cast.  High drama involving husband-snatching, gossip and revenge provides guilty pleasure for all viewers."  Starring Norma Shearer, Paulette Goddard, Joan Crawford and Rosalind Russell.  Directed by George Cukor.
August 7 (Friday) -- Camelot (1967) -- "The Lerner-Loewe score in this adaptation of the Broadway musical enhances the story of the romance between Sir Lancelot (Nero) and Guinevere (Redgrave), King Arthur's (Harris) Queen.  See the effect the 60s had on Camelot."  Starring Richard Harris, Vanessa Redgrave and Franco Nero.  Directed by Joshua Logan.
August 20 (Thursday) -- The Life and Times of Andy Warhol: Superstar (1990) -- "Comprised of interviews with people as diverse as Dennis Hopper, Grace Jones, Roy Lichtenstein, Lou Reed and Shelly Winters, this documentary captures the life and the mystery of the artist and the person--Andy Warhol.  Insightful and amusing." Starring Jean Michel Basquiat.  Directed by Chuck Workman.


Movies in the Park 2009 at Flat Branch is sponsored by U.S. Cellular, KPLA 101.5 and Columbia Parks & Recreation.  Movies cost $1 for adults and are free for children 12 and under.  Here are the remaining films for the summer:
August 14 (Friday) -- Coraline (2009) -- Movie begins at 8:45 pm with pre-show entertainment starting at 8 pm. 
September 11 (Friday) -- The Jungle Book -- Movie begins at 7:45 pm with pre-show entertainment starting at 7 pm.

In celebration of its 50th anniversary, the Columbia Public Library is sponsoring a special showing of Some Like It Hot at The Blue Note. The screening will by on July 19 (Sunday) at 7 pm.  Tickets cost $1 and will be available at the door.
