Starbucks free pastry day

Starbucks is giving away a free pastry with the purchase of a beverage on July 21 from opening to 10:30 am.  Just print the invite from their website. The invitation says to bring it to a participating Starbucks so check your favorite branch first to see if they are participating. I just called the one at 9th and Elm and they said they are but the guy who answered the phone at the Broadway branch had no idea.

Orchard MOMS Club pre-sale tonight

My last post about Children's Orchard said that the brand name fall items were being released tomorrow, July 18.  Apparently, there's a pre-sale TONIGHT for MOMS Club members from 7 to 9 pm.  If you know a Club member, you might want to tag along for a better selection.  (The store says it will restock for tomorrow morning.)

Old Navy Weekly 7/16 tips

Old Navy Weekly has updated again.  The big coupons were $75 and $50 off $100 but like before, those went really quickly!  Here are the tips for uncovering the remaining coupons:

Name a modelquin and get 25% off -- Click on the box that says "Life as a supermodelquin kid..."  The answer to the question is NATALIE.  When you use this coupon, the cashier will ask you to name a modelquin.  Their names are Kelly, Heather & Josh, Eva & Enrique, Michelle & Wesley, and Amy.  You only need to name one.
$15 off $75 -- Click the link to the video in the bottom left corner of the page.  Keep your cursor arrow positioned over the video.  Once the arrow changes into a hand, click to uncover the coupon.  The time to click changes so you just have to watch for the hand.
20% off with 2 jeans -- Drag the blue pen in the left hand of the little girl in the hot pink shirt and drop it into the pocket of the messenger bag of the little girl in the light pink shirt below her.
15% off -- Drag the black-and-white scarf to the neck of the model in the inset above the scarves.
10% off with uniform purchase -- Drag the blue scarf to the neck of the model in the inset above the scarves.

August 7 (Friday) -- Camelot (1967) -- "The Lerner-Loewe score in this adaptation of the Broadway musical enhances the story of the romance between Sir Lancelot (Nero) and Guinevere (Redgrave), King Arthur's (Harris) Queen.  See the effect the 60s had on Camelot."  Starring Richard Harris, Vanessa Redgrave and Franco Nero.  Directed by Joshua Logan.

Free (and discounted) restaurant food

The only place I know that gives out free food without joining an email list or club is Sparky's Homemade Ice Cream on 9th Street. When it's your birthday, you get free ice cream, and kids always get a 1/2 scoop free!

I guess I should say that many restaurants (mostly chains, like Applebee's) would also give you free dessert on your birthday without having to join anything.

Warning: The rest of the free food (and special discounts) on this post are earned through joining email lists or membership clubs through the restaurant websites.  If you're wary of using your main email address, you can opt to create a new email account specifically for promotions and memberships.  Also, although a lot of restaurants offer freebies, they are not all created equal, so pick well and eat free!

Walgreens $5 coupon

Walgreens is offering a $5-off coupon for July 16 and 17 only.  It can be printed off the website.  Please read the fine print: $25 minimum purchase, certain purchases excluded, and limit one coupon per customer per offer.  Interestingly, if you use the equivalent code (DELIGHT) online, the limit is 5 uses per account.

Gateway Arch discounted tickets

If you're heading to St. Louis this weekend, you might want to take advantage of the discounted adult (16 and up) tickets at the Gateway Arch.  If you haven't taken the ride to the top, it's definitely worth it on a clear day (second pic above shows view from the top).

The National Park Service has selected certain summer weekends to promote the Arch with discounted ticket prices.  The promotion will be on Saturday and Sunday only, July 18 and 19.  In August, the dates are August 15 and 16.

Here are the discounted and regular ticket rates:
Tram to the top -- $7 (reg $10)
Movie (documentary, "Monument to the Dream") -- $4 (reg $7)
Riverboat cruise -- $12 (reg $14)
Tram and movie -- $11 (reg $14)
Tram and riverboat -- $21 (reg $22)

Looks like the weekend weather will be great... 70s and sunny!

Sonic Chiller for 99 cents

Sonic is giving away 99-cent coupons for Sonic Chillers on their website (reg price $2.49).  Here's the link to the promotion. You will receive the coupon via email when you submit your address on the site.

If you haven't seen the TV ads and are wondering what chillers are, the website describes them as "refreshing limeade blended together with creamy vanilla soft serve" topped with whipped cream and a lime.  It comes plain (classic) or in cherry and strawberry flavors.

There are Sonic branches on Rangeline, Paris Rd, Bus Loop, Brickton Rd, and E St. Charles Rd.

Limit one coupon per email address and you can't use the coupon during Happy Hour.

Movies for less

With the price of movie tickets and refreshments, going to the movies has been crossed off many budgets.  Video rental stores work just fine but the late fees are annoying.  For those who want to avoid late fees, Netflix and Blockbuster Online are the way to go. Both companies send your DVDs straight to your mailbox.  You can keep the DVDs for any length of time without late fees but in order to maximize your monthly fee, you need to turnover quickly. Blockbuster has one over Netflix in that you have the option to return the DVD to their store (on Clark Ln), speeding up the return process and allowing you to get your next DVD sooner.

Another video rental option is through the DVD "vending machine" called redbox.  It has a simple fee schedule: $1 per night.  So, if you grab a DVD right when you want to watch it and return it the next day, you only pay $1!  If you submit your email address online, you get one free rental.  The selection is not nearly as large as other video rentals and it varies per machine.  You can browse the selection online, see which redbox in the area has the particular DVD, and reserve it.  Here in town, there are redboxes in HyVee and Walmart.

Even though movies can be very expensive, there are movies that are only seen "right" on the big screen!  (Star Trek?  The Dark Knight?)  To save some money on tickets, unless you are a student or senior (and therefore enjoy special discounts), you have to pick the right time to watch.  At Hollywood Theater (off of Stadium), movies before 4pm cost $6.25 and those between 4 and 6pm cost $5.75 (regular admission $8.25).  At Forum 8 (off of Forum), shows before 6pm cost $6.00 (regular admission also $8.25).

One way to see a movie for free is to attend a movie screening. Most movies have free showings to gauge audience reaction. Passes are either available to the general public or through partner establishments.  Apparently, getting a pass does not guarantee entry to the movie; they seat on a first come, first served basis. However, getting there an hour early is usually enough lead time. Gofobo is a website that allows easy searching for local movie screenings.  Unfortunately, there are no screenings here in town, but there are some in St. Louis and Kansas City.  The current available screenings are of Orphan and G-Force.  While passes are sometimes available directly through gofobo, these movie passes are only available through partner companies (links on the site). One such partner is Review St. Louis, which currently has raffles for passes to Funny People and G-Force.

Update 7/15:  I forgot to add this yesterday.  If you enjoy documentaries and TV series, the place to score free DVD rentals is the library.  It does not have the most extensive selection, but it's free!  Limit 5 DVDs checked out at once.  Due back in 1 week but you can renew your rental online or over the phone up to three times (unless there's a hold on the title).  Plus, no late fees BUT a hold will be put on your account if you do not return overdue items.

Free shade tree

Columbia Water and Light has an ongoing program called Tree Power.  It offers all electric customers a free 6- to 10-foot shade tree.  Limit one tree per electric meter.  You can either file your application online or over the phone (874-7325).  The website explains the process and has the link to the online application form.

You will receive a coupon for the tree in the mail and redeem the coupon at Superior Garden Center.  The following trees are currently available under this program: red maple, river birch, crabapple, pin oak, and red oak.

If you do avail of the free shade tree, be sure to call 1-800-DIG-RITE before you dig any holes in your yard!

Plants on sale

Superior Garden Center (on Old 63) is having a big sale on ALL in-stock merchandise.  It's a progressive sale: 30% off this week, 40% off next week starting 7/20, 50% off starting 7/27.

It might not be the ideal time to start a garden, but I'm told that as long as you keep plants watered, they can do well through a summer transplant.

Also, if you need help planning your garden, you can take a picture to Superior and they will help you with the layout and design.
